Looking Back
In my early law firm days, I used to say: no one is going to be harder on me than I am on myself. Looking back all these years later, I can see how unhelpful and harmful that was to repeat to myself.
It was harder to be kind to myself in all aspects of my life, than it was to be overly self-critical and negative with myself.
It took me years to learn how to practice self-kindness. To this day, I work daily on giving myself grace (which includes daily written affirmations), and not always focusing on how I might be coming up short with the many responsibilities we all juggle each day. I work on letting go of the thoughts that don't serve me, and on reminding myself that I'm giving my best and that has to be good enough.
I also learned that we can work towards being our best selves and reaching our highest potential, while recognizing and honoring where we are, how far we've come, and looking at ourselves and saying: Hey, I really did that. I did that.
There's nothing wrong with owning and sitting in your greatness, while acknowledging there's so much more for you to learn, discover, and develop within yourself. That's the beauty of the journey. It never ends, and it's not supposed to.
