Priorities Baby
When you're stressed and overwhelmed, keep it as simple as possible: Set your priorities and focus on what's immediately in front of you.
That could mean you have to put your attention on the work that has to really get done now; you have to take some time for your own emotional well-being; or you have to pick up your kids from school when they get sick, and much of the work you had planned to do that day is out the window.
Setting your priorities and focusing on what's immediately in front of you is a high impact, practical strategy you can take right now to make your life a bit easier and less overwhelming.
Don't take it from me. This is wisdom Maria Melendez Global Chief Diversity Officer at Sidley Austin LLP shared with me on the most recent episode of Humble Rising Podcast.
In this episode, Maria shares her journey from Ponce, Puerto Rico to Sidley Austin in New York City, where she was a partner for nearly three decades, before she took her current role. She went on maternity leave and became partner in the same year as 9-11. Sidley's NYC office was in the World Trade Center at the time.
Maria and I talk through navigating the experience of being one of the few women of color, choosing how you want to show up each day, learning how to shift your mindset as a professional and as a person with responsibilities outside of work (especially with caregiving) to get the results you want. That includes letting go of the need to be superwoman.
Can anyone relate? 🙋🏻♀️
This is part one of a two-part series with Maria. Part two drops later this week. She's bringing the 🔥 and all the heart and positive energy you might need right now. I sure did.
