Selena

Selena remains one of the most influential stars in music. Not only Latino music, but music period. I’m not talking about Selena Gomez. I’m talking about THE Selena.

Selena was Latina, born and raised in Texas. She understood what it was like to navigate being American and Latinidad, and how sometimes you feel like you’ll never be good enough for either.

As a child, her presence and music made me feel like it was OK to be me - in between (yet struggling to belong) to two cultures.

Amor Prohibido, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Techno Cumbia and all her songs remind me so much of my childhood and all the lip-syncing and dancing I did with cousins, my sister, and all by myself.

I played her songs on repeat in my CD player and in our house.

When I need to generate more energy and motivation, I’ll put on Techno Cumbia and get after it.

Just like Selena did when she was here.

Always powerful, authentic and brave 🎧
